“Shelter for all Seasons”
The yak hides have exceptional tensile strength, with a high resistance to abrasion. The hide has evolved to provide the animal with shelter for all seasons, handling even the toughest of conditions.
Measured by shoulder height, Yaks are among the largest bovids. They are well adapted to life at high altitudes, even more than 3,000 metres above sea level. Yaks have adjusted to the climate over several millennia, which has given their hides some unique characteristics.
Yaks graze free in the unspoiled wilderness. Apart from protection against predators, the herd does not need any other care or resources from humans in order to survive. Herders still have a very personal and respectful relationship with the animals, and they even name the individual animals.
Yak leather has thin, light, compact, woven collagen fibres and a fine closed grain. We use vegetable tanning to preserve the naturalness and wildness of the leather.
“Valuable yak leather keeps its softness and firmness in all conditions: in a cold, moist, warm, and dry climate.
Its durability is in a class of its own.”
“Yak leather is three times more durable than cow leather, but still as soft as elk and deer leather.”
“The story of yaks provides an ideal marketing edge.”
